International Tourism Professionals Development Association, Macao (TODA) and the University of Saint Joseph (USJ) have joined hands to offer the Diploma in Sustainable Tourism Practices. This first TODA initiative aims to share Macau’s experience in sustainable tourism development from the perspectives of expert practitioners in the field. TODA strives to serve as a platform for exchange of tourism knowledge, skills and experiences between Macau, Portuguese-speaking countries and beyond. The first intake of the program has successfully attracted 25 local professionals and 18 online participants from Mozambique, Cape Verde, and São Tomé and Príncipe. The participants will have to attend six expert-led lectures covering topics encompassing tourism development, law, marketing, aviation, culinary and cultural heritage, all in relation to sustainability. In addition, they are required to complete a final report in order to be awarded the Diploma.
Professor Jenny Phillips, Dean of the Faculty of Business and Law of USJ and Ms. Florence Ian, President of the Executive Board of TODA commenced the program with opening remarks. Ms. Pamela Chan, member of the Executive Board, also attended the event.
The inaugural lecture was delivered by TODA Chairman Mr. José Luis de Sales Marques, a key figure in Macau’s tourism and cultural development. He discussed how tourism contributes to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and shared insights regarding Macau’s transformation into a tourism hub—from the early model of tour group visitations to the development of diversified cultural events, entertainment activities in integrated resorts and other touristic agenda beyond gaming. During the lecture, Mr. Sales Marques also presented tourism development statistics and some relevant cases concerning sustainable tourism. The participants gained valuable firsthand knowledge of Macau’s tourism evolution and experience, as well as future opportunities in the Greater Bay Area.
The Diploma program is graced by the generous sponsorships from the Portugal-China Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Gracemind Marketing & Public Relations Limited, and some of the Association’s members.
